welcome: what to do: birding

Birding

Birding enthusiasts may have read the excellent article on birding the Natural Grasslands in Southwest Kansas in the June, 2002 issue of "Birder's World." Those taking advantage of that opportunity can come over to the Liberal area and enjoy more great birding. The Arkalon Wildlife Area (open April through October), 11 miles east of Liberal on Highway 54, Meade Lake State Park, approximately 40 miles northeast on Highway 54, and Optima Dam, a few miles south of Hardesty, OK, in the Oklahoma panhandle, are all excellent sites for this pastime. All three areas have campgrounds and facilities. Also, just east of Liberal on Tucker Road there are several bodies of water where many migrant birds can be seen.
