In the fall of 1950 a strategy meeting was held at the home of Joe Hudson planning the start of a new council. On December 10, 1950, the first Grand Knight, Ed Hardy; Deputy Grand Knight, Joe Hudson; Financial Secretary, Frank Shrier; and Chaplain, Father Fredrick started Council 3381 on the road of service to the church and community of Liberal. The first big project was to help in construction of the new St. Anthony's church to replace the old one destroyed by fire. Then came the purchase of the old Garfield School auditorium and move it to the parish grounds to be used as a parish hall and meeting place. The next large project was the building of St. Anthony School. Building the school demanded a lot of the council's time and talent. A lot of work and love went into the construction of our school. The council continued its charitable works in support of the church and school and expanded its influence on the community. In the late 1960s the old C. R. Anthony's building on Main Street was purchased, remodeled and serves the council to this day as a meeting place, bingo hall, and family fun place. The council's outreach to the community led to the beginning of the local Toys for Tots Christ- mas Project now in its 10th year. Toys have been given to nearly 10,000 children thus far. Beginning the new millennium we are back where we started, building a new church. The parish has grown from 50 families to serving 1,200+. The strain on our old facilities is at the breaking point. What a challenge to start the second 100 years of Knights in Kansas and second 50 years of Knights in Liberal.
